MERCURY

Mercury, a planet located 57.91 million kilometres away from the Sun. The planet has an orbital period (the time it takes to circle the sun) of 88 days. At night, Mercury reaches temperatures to -173C or -280F, during the day it reaches 427C or 800F.

 

Unlike Earth, Mercury has three layers. The crust; which is 200km thick, the mantle; which is 600km thick, and the core; which is 3,600km in diameter.

The planet has a diameter of 4,879, meaning its around 1/3 the size of Earth. Mercury has a mass of '3.285 × 10^23 kg' and a gravity of '3.7 m/s²'. Its name derives from the Roman deity (god) called Mercury; the Messenger God.

 

The atmosphere of Mercury contains:

  • 42% Molecular Oxygen

  • 29% Sodium

  • 22% Hydrogen

  • 6% Helium

  • 0.5% Potassium
